A huge haul of Rs 5 crore in cash and other items was seized by election officials on a single day in Meghalaya yesterday.
Under the Model Code of Conduct for the upcoming Lok Sabha 2024 election, authorities are undertaking checks and initiating seizures in the form of cash, alcohol, drugs and other items.
From March 16 to April 3, Rs 4.84 crore in cash and other items had been seized. This amount more than doubled on Thursday.
In an update today, Meghalaya’s Chief Electoral Officer informed that yesterday alone Rs 31.87 lakh had been seized, in addition to 27,348 litres of alcohol (valued at Rs 42.57 lakh), 123.94kg of drugs (valued at Rs 1.39 lakh), 1,345 “freebies” (valued at Rs 65,680) and 4.61 lakh in “other items” that were valued at a whopping Rs 2.92 crore for a total value of Rs 5.07 crore.
