The Voice of the People Party (VPP) will organise a series of public rallies over the “unjust” implementation of the roster system that has been put in place to administer the state government’s job reservation policy.
The three rallies will begin with one at Mawlai Madan Heh on April 17 at 2pm, followed by Jowai’s Iawmusiang on April 19 at 12 noon and then in Jaiaw in Shillong the following day at 2pm.
The roster system was made mandatory by the High Court of Meghalaya but created by the state government. The VPP and Khasi Hills-based pressure groups want the roster system to only be prospective and not retrospective in application. However, certain Garo Hills-based groups want it to be retrospective. The VPP has blamed the state government for not making the system prospective but the government has said that it is the High Court that has insisted that it be retrospective.
Today, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said that the government has been “apathetic” to the party’s demand that a special session of the Assembly be called to discuss the matter. The government will examine it in cabinet before taking on board all members of the governing coalition and then holding an all-party meet but has so far ruled out a special Assembly session.
