The rise in the water level of the Huroi River, located on the border with Bangladesh, has alarmed the inhabitants living near it.
The Waheh Shnong of Huroi, Golden Marbaniang, has urged the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaiñtia Hills and reminded him of a letter written last year requesting that a retaining wall be constructed to prevent the overflow from the river putting the lives of the people at risk.
Residents there face many inconveniences, especially during heavy downpours, and at times they have to flee their homes and have also seen their livestock being swept away by the strong river currents.
Marbaniang also appealed to the MLA of Sutnga Saipung, Santa Mary Shylla, to look into the matter and is hopeful that the government and department concerned address the matter at the earliest to prevent any untoward incidents.
