Shillong MP Ricky A J Syngkon has urged the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) to improve the infrastructure and manpower in the Dawki land port.
In a letter to LPAI Chairman Aditya Mishra yesterday, Syngkon thanked the Department of Border Management under the Ministry of Home Affairs for setting up the first land port in the State which was inaugurated on May 4, 2023.
“On the 14th September, 2024 I personally paid visit to this port to see the prospects and potentiality of this port and on this visit, I observed a number of pertinent issues that must be addressed at the earliest so as to optimise the potential and efficiency of the port and its effective functioning,” Syngkon said.
As far as infrastructure is concerned, the Shillong MP urged the LPAI to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the entire campus of Dawki land port. He also said that network and communication which is extremely poor requires immediate attention.
Syngkon also said that widening of the road leading to the land port that is presently under construction must be sped up and warehousing including cold storage facilities should be constructed.
“Testing facilities to ensure quality products (perishable and non-perishable items) must also be made available. Opening of a bank in the port is a must for foreign exchange and other banking related activities besides an ATM,” he said while also urging for increasing the parking space at the land port.
On manpower, Syngkon said the Dawki land port must be managed by competent people and not by some unqualified personnel.
“Employment on a priority basis to locals for managerial as well as non- managerial positions must be considered,” he added.
