A woman who news channels in Assam claimed had been arrested in connection with the death of a boy from Majuli, has clarified today that she was asked by police to merely give her statement, as she knew the deceased, and was not detained.
On November 21 the body of a man was recovered by Byrnihat police at Pahamlang, 17th Mile. The deceased was later, with the help of Assam police, identified as Sandip Bhuyan of Majuli in Assam.
Bhuyan had gone missing from his rented home in Assam on November 20 and his body was discovered in Ri-Bhoi the following day. The remains were handed over to his family for the final rites.
Ri-Bhoi police registered a case and began their investigations but certain news channels in Assam reported that the Meghalaya woman, whose name is being withheld, had been detained by the authorities.
She clarified today that Byrnihat police had asked her to give a statement, following which she was sent home. Police are still investigating the incident and no arrests have been made.
