The remaining Congress Party candidates for the February 27 state elections will be released by Republic Day, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala informed today.
A meeting will be held tomorrow in Delhi by the screening committee and the election committee and they should give their final answer as to the names by January 25 or 26.
The party had released the names of 40 candidates last month. There are a further 17 candidates whose names have been put forward for the remaining seats, with the Congress planning on keeping one or two spare “for strategic fighting”, Pala said.
He added that Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma quitting the NCP and returning to the Congress will have an influence on a lot of youth since he will be an example of a youth who was a victim of divisive people in the party (he was referring to former party leader Dr Mukul Sangma, who has joined the TMC) but who has now returned.
“He was once a victim but will now be a leader. This past experience of his will give a better platform and better reforms,” Pala said.
