An awareness rally on Women Empowerment was organised jointly by the Office of the District Library, Jowai Art & Culture Department and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation under the aegis of Ministry of Culture.
The rally was organized to commemorate the 250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the father of Modern India.
Deputy Commissioner B.S Sohliya flagged off the awareness rally from the district library office.
Students and teachers from various schools of Jowai Town participated in the rally. The students carried placards with awareness slogans on Women Empowerment. ‘
Sohliya noted with deep concern that though women are treated at par with men and empowered with all facilities, women and children are still being subjected to all kinds of violence, especially those certain pockets where proper education has not reached them.
“We must make women empowerment a reality, we should not be silent bystanders when we see women or children being ill-treated and assaulted,” he said.
He advised the students to take a stand and inform authorities if ever they find or come across such cases.
Terence Sawain, who chaired the programme highlighted the contribution made by Raja Ram Mahon Roy towards empowerment of women. He also mentioned about the contribution made by Raja Ram Mohan Roy who fought against practices of Child Marriage, Polygamy and Sati.
