Negligence and apathy by the PWD authorities has led to the tragic death of a doctor as his car fell from a broken road into a deep gorge at Iongnoh village in West Jaiñtia Hills district.
The incident took place yesterday at around 3 pm when Dr. Sanjoy K. Shylla, a Medical and Health Officer at the Khliehriat Civil Hospital and his two-year-old daughter were returning from a school picnic near Syntu Ksiar on their Mahindra XUV 300.
The car was completely mangled due to the impact of the fall but his daughter was luckily unhurt.
The incident was first noticed by cow herders who heard the cry for help by the daughter of the deceased doctor.
It is learnt that the road which connects Chyrmang village was washed away by monsoon rains in June this year and since then the PWD did not repair the road nor put up any barricade to signal commuters about the danger.
The funeral of Dr. Shylla will be held tomorrow at Wahiajer.
Many people including netizens have demanded stern action against erring PWD officials for the incident.
According to residents of the area, when the road was washed away in June, a similar incident occurred when a car had fallen into the roadside gorge. Fortunately there was no casualty.
