Work to construct a pumping station for Phase 3 of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) will begin soon, Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise Marak informed today, as a dispute with Hima Mawphlang has been resolved.
Phase 3 had been delayed as Hima Mawphlang, which donated the land for the project, had demanded jobs for locals in exchange.
The PHE Department and Chief Secretary had recently held meetings with representatives of Hima Mawphlang and the matter is now resolved, Marak said.
Meanwhile, the minister also requested the people of Shillong to be understanding and patient with the water pipe laying work that is ruining the city’s already bad roads and turning pockets into a muddy mess.
Marak said that his department is coordinating with the Public Works Department when the pipe laying takes place. He said that the inconvenience to the public is short-term but, once the project is completed, things will go back to normal and the better water supply will benefit all.
