A meeting was convened on Saturday in Williamnagar by pressure groups and the Nokma Association of East Garo Hills regarding the demand for a winter capital for Meghalaya.
The meeting was chaired by Ronald Bryan A Sangma, adviser of the eastern unit of the A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF).
The meeting brought together several organizations, including the ASPF, Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), Garo Students Union (GSU), Nokma Association of East Garo Hills, A·chik Progressive Approach (APA), Mothers Union, All India Garo Union (AIGU) and Garo Hills Enlightenment Society (GES). The primary agenda was to discuss the state government’s recent notification of a committee to examine the establishment of a winter capital in Tura.
In his address, president of the Nokma Association, Alden Marak, emphasised that the fight for the winter capital would be pursued with love and unity, free from hatred or discrimination.
Chibasal Marak, a lecturer at Loyola College, asserted that the challenges faced by the youth of Garo Hills in competing with their counterparts in other regions of the state are not attributable to a lack of ambition or educational commitment. Rather, these challenges stem from limited opportunities and inadequate resources. He posited that the establishment of the winter capital in Tura would provide the essential opportunities and facilities necessary for development.
