The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills promulgated an order under Section 163 of the BNSS prohibiting the illegal killing of fish and environmental degradation in the Umiam River falling within the boundary of Umlyngka village from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu through the use of poisonous chemicals and explosive substances.
These include bleaching powder, ammonium sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, fishing nets, etc.
The order was issued yesterday. It was necessitated following reports that miscreants are rampantly killing fish along the Umiam River within the boundary of Umlyngka village and adjoining areas through haphazard use of poisonous chemicals and explosive substances that can cause irreversible damage to the river and endanger the aquatic life therein unless prevented.
Any violation shall be prosecuted under Section 223 of the BNS. This order came into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
