Members of the Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) and Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) detained nine non-tribal migrants on Monday night, claiming that they entered Meghalaya without proper documentation.
The nine were detained at Umsning at around 10pm and handed over to police there.
The RBYF and FKJGP said that their members were keeping vigil against illegal influx by migrants.
According to the pressure groups, the migrants had tried to enter the state with an Assam-registered vehicle (AS 11 EC 0412) that carried a ‘On PWD Duty’ tag.
The RBYF and FKJGP also warned contractors of any department or any individuals to refrain from bringing in labourers without obtaining the appropriate licences from the district council.
