This year saw an unusual alignment between Easter and the end of the financial year, with both coinciding on the same day today.
Although March 31 is usually a time when government offices and banks stay open to wrap up financial-related matters pertaining to the end of the year, the Khasi Students Union was having none of it, with members of the pressure group forcing banks that were open to close in order to respect the sanctity of Easter.
Banks had been warned not to go against the feelings of the Christian community on what is one of its most sacred days and the pressure group maintained that states like Manipur and Mizoram had declared holidays today even though it is the last day of the 2023-24 financial year.
Some of the banks that were forced to down their shutters included branches at Mawiong, Mawprem, Garikhana, Upper Shillong, Mawkhar, Khyndailad, Barik, Malki, Laitumkhrah and Nongmensong.
