Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has claimed that Meghalaya is in a comfortable position as far as availability of power is concerned.
The statement came from the minister amid fears of load shedding, which were a bane for months on end last year.
“We are doing pretty well and if the rains come, it will be much better,” Mondal said, adding that the state-owned Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) should be complimented for ensuring that they are managing the power situation well.
As far as the Myntdu Leshka hydropower project is concerned, two of the units that were not generating power have begun to do so since May 7 and are producing almost 1 million units.
The third unit of the project, however, is not working but is expected to come online by June.
Asked about frequent power cuts in some areas, the minister said that he learned during a review meeting that areas like Mawryngkneng and Mawkynrew had faced disruptions in supply because of severe weather and not because of a shortage in supply.
