Shillong, Apr 20: Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla today said there are certain factions attempting to capitalise on the Lumpongdeng issue as a means to gain electoral advantages.
His remark comes ahead of the scheduled street protest announced by the Voice of the People Party (VPP). Starting April 22 the opposition will begin its protest from Motphran against employment challenges through the district selection committee (DSC) and the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), the difficulties faced by the teachers and environmental concerns, including the Lumpongdeng Island issue.
With the MP by-election fast approaching, Shylla stated that there are always individuals eager to exploit critical issues for personal or political gain. However, he said that the citizens are increasingly aware of these tactics and can identify political opportunism when it arises.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Manuel Badwar alleged that the VPP is working to derive political mileage from the issues surrounding Lumpongdeng.
He stated that should the VPP genuinely focus on the Lumpongdeng controversy, both he and the public are prepared to extend their support.
