The Meghalaya police today warned the public that fraudsters could take advantage of those seeking urgent medical supplies to dupe them financially.
The shortage of drugs and oxygen cylinders in the country (though so far not a known factor in Meghalaya) has led many to use social media to try and source supplies. The police said that criminals are looking for such posts on social media and then promising help to those in need for money paid upfront. Once the funds are transferred the fraudsters cut off contact with their victims.
“Therefore, it is strongly advised to be vigilant before making any upfront payment to an unknown person for any medical supplies,” the police said in a release, adding that the public should take precautions when posting their phone number online when looking for help.
