The State cabinet has today approved the setting up of an engineering wing in the police headquarters in Shillong.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the proposal of the Police Department was approved as the department has large infrastructure all over the State.
He also said that the engineering wing was required to allow the Police Department to take care of its own buildings and offices.
According to Sangma, in the absence of an engineering wing, the department had to follow different procedures which are very time consuming and involve different agencies to do small things even for repair of a bathroom or repair of a police station or a barrack.
However, informed sources said that the decision to set up the engineering wing was proposed by the Police Department to put a stop to misuse of power by police officials as far as construction works are concerned.
On November 2, 2022, MPS officer Gabriel K. Iangrai was arrested after the alleged diversion of funds in the construction of the National Emergency Response System (NERS) Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) building at Shillong Sadar police station.
