Shillong, Jun 27: A drip irrigation project under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana – Per Drop More Crop (PMKSY-PDMC) 2025–26 has significantly improved the income of a small farmer in Harigaon village, South West Garo Hills.
Nerdaya Koch of Harigaon under Rerapara C&RD Block received a drip irrigation system and pumpset in February 2026.
Using the facility, he cultivated watermelon on 0.4 hectares with an investment of about Rs. 20,000. The crop has yielded an estimated revenue of Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 80,000, much higher than his earnings last year.
In 2025, Koch grew watermelon on the same plot but faced water shortages due to poor irrigation, which affected growth and reduced income. With the new drip system, water is supplied efficiently, leading to better plant growth, higher productivity and improved returns.
Koch said the intervention has cut down labour and water use while increasing profitability. Encouraged by the results, he plans to continue using modern irrigation methods and expand cultivation next season.
Officials said the success story shows how PMKSY-PDMC is promoting efficient water use, boosting farm productivity and raising incomes through climate-resilient practices in South West Garo Hills.
