“Kumno phi long?” Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the crowd in perfect Khasi today as he kicked off his roadshow in the state as the ultimate star campaigner for his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The only thing that was amiss was that he was standing on a platform in Tura, Garo Hills where people speak Garo language and not Khasi. The words translate into a greeting “how are you”.
It was a grand moment for the people of Garo Hills as Prime Minister Narendra Modi strode across the stage to greet them as he kicked off his roadshow in the state. But though he greeted the people in Khasi language, the crowd was gracious enough to cheer without skipping a beat.
This incident once again reinforced the belief in the north east region that the rest of Indians have no knowledge of the people here. The least that the PM Modi could do is know the basics of the State he is visiting and where he is located as he hopes to woo people to vote for his party.
Nevertheless, it will remain a cringe worthy moment and the video will certainly spark off a flurry of memes in the future.
