The final agreement that was entered between Meghalaya and Assam in the first phase of border talks has left people unsatisfied, lawyer Fenela L Nonglait has said.
She said that the state government is satisfied in finalising the agreement without pleasing the public. “This is not the complete realisation of rights,” Nonglait told reporters.
According to her, Meghalaya has not encroached into Assam. “Encroachment is from the other side (Assam), but his has been made into a dispute. There will be a dispute when we claim others land,” she added.
Nonglait also said that when she met Assam MP and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who had asked her to join the BJP, she told him that with the present scenario of the border agreement which is unsatisfactory, he told her if there is rambling amongst the people then it can be revisited again.
“From there they can it (border agreement) can be revisited again here we are saying it can’t,” she said.
According to her there is a political way which is easier to resolve the border dispute than going to court. He said that now that she is in the BJP she can tell them the state’s opinion instead of protesting in the street.
In March 2022, Meghalaya and Assam partially resolved a 50-year-old border dispute in six of the 12 sectors along their boundary.
