Shillong, Aug 12: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday officially launched Ride Shillong, a public electric bicycle sharing system designed to promote eco-friendly transport, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Joining the CM was fitness enthusiast Milind Soman, alongside senior government officials, and cycling enthusiasts from across the city.

The initiative is part of the Government of Meghalaya’s vision for a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly Shillong, implemented with the support of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, GIZ (India-Germany cooperation), Meghalaya Tourism and the Green Urban Mobility Partnership.

In his address, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed pride in launching a project that balances environmental sustainability with modern convenience.

“Today is more than just the launch of a new transport system—it’s the beginning of a shift in how we think about mobility in our city,” he said. “Shillong’s terrain has always posed a challenge to traditional cycling, but with electric bicycles, we are removing that barrier. This will not only encourage more people to adopt cycling but also reduce our carbon footprint and ease our city’s traffic.”

He added, “Sustainable transport is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. With Ride Shillong, we are giving our people a cleaner, healthier option to move around the city while also showcasing our commitment to climate action. I encourage everyone—students, professionals, and tourists—to make cycling a part of their daily routine. Together, we can build a Shillong where roads are less congested, the air is cleaner, and our community is healthier.”

Urban Affairs Commissioner & Secretary Dr. Vijay Kumar noted that the launch aligns with ongoing efforts to make Shillong more walkable and cyclist-friendly. “We are redesigning streets, expanding footpaths and developing cycling tracks. This is a holistic approach to urban mobility, and Ride Shillong is a crucial part of it,” he said.

Fitness icon and environmental advocate Milind Soman also addressed the gathering, applauding the initiative’s potential to inspire healthier living. “Cycling is not only good for the planet—it’s transformative for your personal well-being. Shillong is showing the rest of India how to lead by example,” he remarked.

The day’s program began with a cycle rally flag-off from Elephant Falls to Mawphlang by Dr. Vijay Kumar, followed by ceremonial felicitations for the Chief Minister and Milind Soman. Dr. Vijay Kumar’s welcome remarks highlighted the PBS initiative and cycling culture, while Milind Soman’s motivational address focused on fitness, cycling, and sustainable lifestyles.

Later the Chief Minister launched the Electric Public Bicycle Sharing System, followed by the Cycling Heritage Rally within Shillong City.

Also present at the event were East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, Manjunath Sekhar (Director, Sustainable Urban Mobility, GIZ India), and other dignitaries and senior officials from the Government of Meghalaya, GIZ, and the Green Urban Mobility Partnership. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Manjunath Sekhar.
