Parents of children who study at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Mawphlang have written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan complaining about the various anomalies in the school including the failure of the principal to address the problems faced by students.
In the letter, the parents said that they were compelled to write to the minister since the principal was reluctant to address the problems experienced by the students in the school and hostel.
They mentioned the faulty electrical fittings and lack of electricity while also referring to the tragic incident on July 28 where a student lost his life after electrocution while taking bath in the hostel.
The letter also mentioned poor sanitation in the hostel premises compelling students to live in unsanitary conditions which pose serious health risks.
Further, the parents said that on account of closure of the school, online classes were provided to students by the school authority as a stop-gap arrangement. According to them, online classes were not effective due to network problems and inability of poor students to buy smartphones. They also said that science subject cannot be taught online as it requires experiments as prescribed in the syllabus.
In the letter, the parents also said that mid-term and term examinations are scheduled to start from September 23 till October 3 and the principal has directed the students to sit in the examination.
According to the parents, the students faced great difficulty and huge expenses as they had to travel 80-100 kilometres. They also said that since there is no public transport from their villages to the school, they have to hire vehicles at Rs 2000-Rs 3000 for to and fro journey per day of the examination.
Blaming the principal for the sad state of affairs in JNV Mawphlang, the parents urged Pradhan to replace the principal “in order to restore the peaceful atmosphere, confidence and good image of the school and remove the trust deficit”.
