The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, National Sample Survey Office Field Operations Division Regional Office Shillong, is responsible for conducting surveys in diverse fields on all India basis.
The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is one of the principal sources of industrial statistics in India by providing statistical information to assess and evaluate, objectively and realistically the changes in growth composition and structure of organise manufacturing sector comprising activities related to manufacturing processes, repair services, gas and water supply and cold storage.
The survey is being conducted annually under the statutory provisions of collection of Statistics (COS) Act 2008 (as amended in 2017) and the rules framed there under in 2011. In collaboration with Umiam Industries Association a one day camp was organised for sensitisation and to enable self-compilation of ASI returns through the ASI web portal by the concerned units.
The camp started with the welcome address by P Das, Assistant Director, NSSO(FOD), RO, Shillong. A keynote address was followed by M Nongrum, Deputy Director, NSSO(FOD), RO, Shillong.
The main objective of holding this camp was to give an awareness on how to compile ASI data by the factory and to familiarise them with the data entries through online mode on the ASI portal. Nongrum urged all the units to provide the NSSO office with accurate data to avoid false submission of information that could hamper the formulation of different policies by the government.
Representing the industries, A Chakraborty, Deputy Manager, Riangdo Veeners Pvt Ltd, stated that the industrial sector data should be accurate to ensure smooth formulation of the policies pertaining to this sector. He also stated that initially it was a challenge for the factory unit to enter the data independently on the portal. Having these camps had helped them to be more aware of the ASI online compilation of data through the ASI web portal.
