Blasting works to construct the Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai road in West Khasi Hills district has affected people on Steplanglur, it has been reported.
Stones hurled in course of the blast in the village, have caused damage to over six houses and a school. These cracks have caused fear and uncertainty among residents since their homes have been significantly affected.
Sordar of Steplanglur, Syntarning Wanñiang expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing construction and said the issue was raised with the district administration, but to no avail.
The damaged houses belonged to Teiborlin Nongsiej, Kloilan Syiemlieh, Briplingstar Kharbani, Bistiful Nongsiej, Listiful Nongsiej, Wandarisha Nongsiej and others.
Residents say they also spoke to workers of the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) to observe caution during blasting but their pleas remain unheard.
The Jurïawthei Presbyterian Lower Primary School has also been damaged by the blast works and a farmland belonging to an orphan family of six members.
Sosana Mary Nongsiej, the eldest in the family said that half of the farmland has been submerged by mud flowing from the road construction.
Headmaster of the school, Rockefeller Nongsiej said students are facing great inconvenience as a footpath they used has been dismantled to pave way for the road project. He said students have to literally crawl along the path which poses a threat.
