Due to continued harassment faced by the people of Meghalaya along the border with Assam, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has asked for a special session of the Assembly to be held to discuss the issue before the next round of border negotiations between the two states.
The latest flare-up on Monday saw Assam police manhandle Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar. The Assam authorities claimed that the village belongs to Assam and uprooted an electric pole that had been erected by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL).
Syiem also said that the district councils should be invited by the government to discuss the issue as well.
“If there is no thorough discussion by the legislative assembly and district councils, then the border talks with Assam will go nowhere,” he said.
