Editor,
The unabated violence perpetrated on innocent civilians across the state of Manipur has caused a major political storm and social upheaval based on daily reports emanating out from various news sources. The violence has displaced many people irrespective of their ethnicity and representation.
Manipur has always been a hotbed of insurgency, drug trade, illegal arm sales and contraband which showcases the governance system has pathetically failed.
On the contrary, Meghalaya has become a “holding” ground for communities coming from Manipur through those residing in parts of Shillong. It is important to note that the influx of refugees is going to put a strain on the localities and also in tackling law and order.
Much of the drugs and contraband seized by Meghalaya’s ANTF unit portray a very vicious cycle. While it’s genuine to help those that are in need, however, this must not be taken for granted by allowing people to illegally settle in this State lest we turn into another battleground.
