The project implementation unit of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has been directed to immediately begin repair works in some stretches along the National Highway 6 in East Jaintia Hills district.
Sources said that the district administration during a meeting yesterday directed the NHAI to carry out urgent repairs of the road near Sonapur and Tongseng Bridge and the pot holes at Khliehriat market area and Lad-Rymbai area.
The NHAI has also been directed to submit its report latest by August 7 to the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner had raised concerns over the safety of the public as the damages of the NH 6 has caused break down of heavy vehicles and extreme traffic congestion.
The bustling highway, which also connects Assam, Manipur and Tripura, is a crucial lifeline and the district administration is apprehensive that with its present condition, overturning of vehicles and accidents would increase and that may lead to loss of life.
