The newly elected members of the 11th Meghalaya legislative assembly will be administered oath on Monday.
All the 59 elected MLAs will be administered oath by pro tem speaker Timothy D Shira in the assembly building at Rilbong.
Earlier today, the NPP MLA from Resubelpara constituency and former Deputy Speaker took oath as pro tem Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Governor Phagu Chauhan administered the oath to Shira at the Raj Bhavan.
The National People’s Party (NPP) bagged 26 seats in the 60-member assembly, seven more than the last elections. The United Democratic Party (UDP) won 11 seats while the Congress and the TMC bagged five each. The nascent Voice of the People Party won four seats, the People People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party won two seats each and two independent got one seat each.
NPP president Conrad Sangma met the governor yesterday to stake claim to form a coalition government in Meghalaya. He submitted a letter of support from six MLAs – two from BJP, two from HSPDP and two independents.
Mentionably, elections were held for 59 of 60 seats in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly due to the sudden death of UDP candidate from Sohiong HDR Lyngdoh.
The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the rescheduled polling date for Sohiong.
