A new small catfish, given the scientific name Pseudolaguvia meghalayaensis, was discovered by a research student at the confluence of the Rongkil and Rongdal streams in North Garo Hills, it was announced today.
Pringranchi Dokgre Marak, a zoology student at Assam Don Bosco University, informed Associate Professor of Zoology Yumnam Lokeshwor Singh about the new to science species as part of her dissertation.
Pseudolaguvia is a genus of South Asian river catfishes. These species inhabit hill streams and large rivers. They can be divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of serrations on the anterior (front) edge of the dorsal spine.
The Brahmaputra basin in Assam is home to 12 of 14 species of pseudolaguvia that have smooth anterior edges to their dorsal spines.
