A new pressure group called the Ri Bhoi People’s Council (RBPC) was formed today in the presence of over 300 members of the public.
Among those present were former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member RR Makdoh and former Additional Superintendent of Police P Syiem.
During the event, Makdoh commended the dedication of the district’s youth who have pledged to serve their community through the RBPC.
“As the emerging youth of this district, they have witnessed various issues hindering its growth in multiple aspects. Therefore, as the future generation not only of this district but of the entire state, they must wholeheartedly contribute to the district’s progress through their innovative ideas and potential,” Makdoh said.
In his concluding address, Makdoh officially announced Jayson Lennox Nongrum as the convenor of the organisation.
Nongrum stated that the primary objective is to address various issues faced by the district’s residents, with the Inner Line Permit (ILP) chief among them.
He also emphasised the council’s opposition to the state government’s plan to introduce railways in Khasi-Jaintia Hills until a robust mechanism to combat illegal immigration is established.
The RBPC will also focus on the need for improved healthcare in the district, whose residents currently have to travel to Shillong or Guwahati for care beyond a basic level.
