The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) today filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Rules of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 with an appeal to stay its implementation.
NESO chairman, Samuel B Jyrwa in a statement today said, “Even though, CAA 2019 has exempted the ILP covered states which include Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and also the Sixth Scheduled covered areas which include 98 per cent of Meghalaya, 70 per cent of Tripura and eight districts of Assam. But the rest of the districts of Assam are not exempted posing a serious threat to the entire North Eastern states’ future.”
Jyrwa said in order to protect the microscopic indigenous communities of Northeast which are already threatened by unabated influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, it is imperative that the CAA, 2019 should not be made applicable. He added that it will worsen the already precarious situation of the North Eastern Region.
It may be mentioned that NESO, had filed a petition in the Supreme Count of India on December 19, 2019 against the CAA.
