Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has demanded the immediate removal of the Assistant Sports Director–cum-security in charge in the university for outraging a woman’s modesty.
Nantu Das was accused of molestation of a woman official at the Kiang Nangbah guest house recently, who is supposed to accompany the women’s sports team for an inter-university tournament to be held in Odisha, next week.
The students led by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) thronged Vice Chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla’s office shouted slogans condemning the action of Das.
The protesting students got an assurance from the Vice Chancellor that the matter will be looked into within three days before steps are taken as per the rules and regulations of NEHU.
Speaking to reporters a student of the research scholar forum said that the misdemeanour of Das has put the research scholars working late hours in the labs in great insecurity and they are now feeling unsafe.
“If such a person who is looking after the security of the university is doing this, then how will we feel safe and we fully support the demand of NEHUSU that has given a time frame of three days to remove Das,” she said.
They have also urged students who are facing such situations not to be afraid but to come forward and file a complaint so that necessary action can be taken against the culprits.
Meanwhile, in a letter from the NEHUSU to the Prof Shukla the union also stated that another incident has come to light that the same person has molested another student of the university.
“He (Das) continues to threaten this girl by telling her to come to his office alone as he is responsible for selecting players to represent the university. This kind of indecent and obnoxious culture is highly unbecoming of an NEHU employee who holds an influential position,” they said in the letter.
NEHUSU, who has demanded Das’s removal, has threatened to go on an indefinite strike if he is not removed within three days.
