Shillong, Sep 16 : After coming under near-daily attack from staff and students of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for his actions as Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof SK Srivastava received support today through a statement issued by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Henry Lamin in his favour.
In a one and a half page paean shared with the press, Lamin listed Srivastava’s achievements during his five-year term as VC, which is scheduled to end on September 23.
Srivastava “is known to one and everyone for his humility and honesty and is always ready to meet and listen to anyone, be it students, teaching and non-teaching staff for any of their grievances and always looks for advice and suggestions,” Lamin said. Like two previous VCs, “Srivastava is also facing the wrath from some of the faculty, which has had a very negative impact on the university and the society at large,” he added while saying
that Srivastava has only been following orders of the various Visitors of the University, i.e the President of India.
Srivastava’s achievements, according to Lamin, include completing pending work left by his predecessors; appointing Pro Vice-Chancellors to the Shillong and Tura campuses (Lamin is the Pro VC for Shillong); giving unprecedented responsibilities to Meghalaya locals; leading NEHU to retain its ‘Grade A’ rating; getting the BTech course accredited in “a short span of time”; persevering so that the University Grants Commission and Union
Ministry of Human Resource Development approved a NEHU centre in Wahiajer to cater to Jaiñtia Hills’ students; and bringing “important international and national events” to the university campus, such as Terra Madre and the South Asian Games 2016.
