Following the decision of the Education Department to adopt the NCERT textbooks in schools from the next academic session, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) while appreciating the government’s intention to enhance the quality of school textbooks, said that the sudden shift to NCERT textbooks without broader stakeholder consultation, particularly involving teachers, is a “flawed approach”.
“The VPP acknowledges the government’s motive to improve the quality of education through the adoption of NCERT textbooks from classes 1 to 10. However, we emphasise the importance of wider consultations with stakeholders, especially teachers, before implementing such a significant transition. The process should involve those directly impacted to ensure a smooth and effective integration of the new curriculum,” VPP media cell member Dr. Rusievan Shangpliang said in a statement today.
The VPP also said that the assurance by the chief minister that NCERT textbooks will be adapted to include local content raises concerns about the feasibility of such a task. “Adapting textbooks beyond Science and Mathematics requires rigorous collaboration between the State Council of Educational Research and Training and NCERT. Developing content that reflects local nuances is not an overnight process and demands careful consideration,” it added.
Expressing concern about the potential consequences of adopting NCERT textbooks under the New Education Policy, the party said there is need to critically examine the changes proposed, considering the historical attempts by the BJP to influence educational content. “The VPP cautions against any attempt to alter the educational landscape to fit a particular ideological agenda,” it said.
“While the VPP acknowledges the need to upgrade and improve school textbooks in Meghalaya, we stress the importance of a thorough examination and proper development of the NCERT textbooks. Our opposition is not against the use of NCERT textbooks per se, but we advocate for a meticulous process that prioritises the well-being and educational development of our students,” it added while calling for a more inclusive and deliberative process for the benefit of the education system in the State.
