Shillong, Feb 2: Meghalaya has sought financial assistance from the Central government to host the National Games even as Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said that the State is also ready to shoulder its share.
“When we express our intent to host an event of this magnitude, we must be prepared on our own as well, even as we look to the Centre for support,” Shylla said.
He said there are huge responsibilities that come with hosting a national-level sporting event and with limited financing capacity the State is in need of assistance from the Centre.
Shylla however said the total expense in hosting the games is yet to be finalised. “It is too early to put out a figure at this point. The exercise involves multiple departments, and we are still in the process of working out the estimates,” he stated.
On the Union Budget presented recently, Shylla termed it positive. “The budget looks encouraging for Meghalaya and the region. There are opportunities under schemes like DASKE, and I hope these provisions will be beneficial, especially for the sports department,” he added.
