Muster roll workers and labourers who are demanding the release of pending wages said they will be forced to protest in Shillong if the government fails to make payment by December 17.
Members of the All Jaiñtia Muster Roll Workers & Labour Union today marched to the office of the Executive Engineer PHE (Electrical) and the Executive Engineer PHE (RWS) in Jowai to air their grievances and seek immediate payment of wages.
Adviser of the union Khroo L Pariat said, the workers of PHE were left unpaid since September. He said muster rolls in the Sericulture department in West Jaintia Hills did not receive their wages for six months and those in the Water Resources department since April.
While the PHE department has not implemented the Meghalaya Regular Casual workers scheme 1996 as mandated by the government, the department also failed to include workers as members of the Building and other Construction Welfare Board under the Labour department, he said.
Further, the union also wants the government to upgrade the workers’ skills for those who have served the PHE for five years.
