The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has demanded setting up of an inquiry into the Nongchram MTC bus accident and demanded ex-gratia payment for kin of the victims.
GSU president, Zikku Balgra N Marak in a statement today said, “An inquiry as to determine the exact cause of the accident is required to find out whether it was the driver’s fault, drunken driving or due to bad road infrastructure, the onus of which falls on the shoulder of the government of the day.”
Marak said the loss of precious life can never be replaced. “Many have lost a father, husband, the bread winner of the family hence, it is our demand that the government pay ex gratia to the family members of those who died in the accident,” the GSU said.
Meanwhile, the GSU also paid tribute to the September 30 firing victims who lost their lives in police firing in Tura and Williamnagar, during a protest rally against the alleged bifurcation of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) in 2005.
“The union also remembers our brave brothers who lost their lives on this very day, those brave and courageous souls, who stood and fought for the rights of the Garo People,” the GSU said.
