Shillong, Oct 23: The general meeting of the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association (MSSASA) teachers of Khasi-Jaintia Hills was held today after the recent assurance of the state government on its proposal to take over SSA schools and implement a payment structure for the teachers.
“We gratefully accept this assurance given to us by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and that he has taken this step,” MSSASA president Aristotle Rymbai told reporters after the general meeting held at Malki Ground here.
Rymbai said that as per the assurance given by the CM, the government will announce its policy decision on both the undertakings before Christmas.
The MSSASA president said that this proposal will take effect from the next financial year, i.e. April 1, 2026.
According to Rymbai as per the Chief Minister, the latter wants to settle this issue within the next two months “once and for all”.
“This matter is crucial for the Education department as well as the (SSA) teachers,” he said.
Last week, Sangma had assured a delegation of the MSSASA that SSA teachers will not lose their jobs even after the SSA programme ends at the end of this financial year.
The SSA scheme is central government-sponsored but the state government is in the process of merging the SSA schools with the state education system for when the central support ends. Regarding enhancement of salaries, the Chief Minister had assured the delegation that this will be implemented in the form of a payment scale structure.
