Following days of protests by residents of the Byrnihat area in Ri-Bhoi, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) finally swung into action today and closed six factories.
The protests over the past few days were against air pollution that was allegedly caused by factories in the industrial zone.
According to sources, while specific details are yet to be confirmed, it has been learned that the MSPCB has officially shut down six factories, though their names have not yet been disclosed.
Officials from the Ri-Bhoi district administration, along with representatives from the MSPCB, were present during the closure of these factories.
Thick black smoke, particularly from the industrial chimneys, has raised significant health concerns for the local population.
