Tura, Sep 18 : The Garo Students Union (GSU), Maheskola unit has expressed its dissatisfaction over the non-functioning of a mobile phone tower that was set up two years ago.
This area of South Garo Hills is one of the least developed in the state and falls close to the border of South West Khasi Hills near the Balpakram National Park and the Bangladesh border.
“A Jio tower was set up in our area over two years now. However, it is still not functional. When we approached the Jio authorities on the matter, they said that equipment needed to be taken there which is proving a problem. However we are the worst sufferers as we hardly ever get a mobile signal,” the GSU unit’s President Tirotsing Ch Marak said.
Marak added that they had earlier approached the Deputy Commissioner to seek his intervention in ensuring the area had connectivity but there has been no progress until now.
“It’s really frustrating as we still have no connection to the outside world despite being in the 21st century. Our hope now is that either the administration or any telecom company takes responsibility for connecting us as quickly as possible. All they really have to do is get the towers, which have already been set up, functional,” added the GSU unit President.
