The Karate India Organisation (KIO) announced today that India’s karatekas made history at the 21st AKF Asian Senior Karate Championship and 4th AKF Asian Para-Karate Championship, which was held in Uzbekistan from May 23 to 25.
India won one gold and two bronze medals at the continental event. The gold was won by para-karateka Tarun Sharma (pictured centre) in individual kata (K-21). The two bronze medals were bagged by Alisha (only one name given) in women’s individual kumite -55kg and Bhuvaneshwari Jadhav in women’s individual kumite -68kg.
Tarun’s gold was a historical first for Indian karate and marks a groundbreaking achievement for India at this level.
The KIO congratulated all medal winners and extended sincere appreciation to their coaches and support staff for their relentless dedication and hard work. Upon their return to India, the athletes were warmly welcomed by KIO president Bharat Sharma and other officials. Each medal winner will receive Rs 1.51 lakh from the KIO.
Meanwhile, the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) extended its congratulations. AMKA General Secretary Ksan Kupar Warjri said, “The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association joins in the celebration of the national body and other state associations in this brilliant achievement of the three karatekas to win medals at this international event. Their success will surely inspire young karatekas in Meghalaya and the rest of the country.”
The two championships were organised by the Asian Karate Federation (AKF), which is recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The AKF is a member of the World Karate Federation, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
