Meghalaya should brace itself for a period of intense rain in the coming days, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today issuing a red alert for three districts for Thursday.
The red alert is for East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills. These districts are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy to very heavy rain and extremely heavy rain in isolated areas.
Brown alerts (one level down from red) have been issued for South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills. The rest of the state will be under yellow alert.
Weather forecasts are fluid and the IMD may change its advice when it issues a new update tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority has launched the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) for disaster emergencies. Citizens can call the emergency numbers 112 and 1070 to request help 24×7 when encountering any disaster emergencies in Meghalaya. This was informed through a notification today.
