Mawsynram MLA Ollan S. Suin has voiced concerns over the closure of the border haat in Mawsynram for the past two months due to the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh.
Meghalaya shares a 443km international border with the neighbouring country.
Suin highlighted the economic impact of the situation, noting a sharp decline in activities at the border. “The unrest in Bangladesh has affected the border haat, and we are uncertain when it will reopen. If the situation improves, economic activities will resume, providing much-needed relief to the people who rely on the haat to trade their produce,” he said.
The MLA acknowledged the growing tension in Bangladesh, which has raised security concerns along the border. “The current instability has made the border less secure, but we are hopeful that the situation will ease. As a government, we remain optimistic that through dialogue and improved relations between the two countries, the issue will be resolved,” Suin stated.
The closure of the haat has severely impacted local livelihoods, underscoring the need for a swift resolution to restore normalcy and revive cross-border trade.
