Condemning an incident of a group of men assaulting two women and parading them naked in Manipur, the Mother’s Union, the frontline women organisation in Garo Hills has said that the celebrated ‘Meira Paibis’ has failed to protect women in Manipur.
“It is very depressing that the Meira Paibis– ‘torch bearing’ women activists- widely respected in Manipur as well as in India, had failed to protect these women in their most vulnerable state,” the union said today.
The union said what is more disheartening is that it took a 26-second video clip from Manipur for the Prime Minister to utter “a few sentences” and the Chief Minister of Manipur to react on the heinous violence that was inflicted on women in Manipur since the ethnic clashes broke out in the state on 3 May.
It said that the explicit act of sexual assault on innocent women is an act committed by something alien to human beings, “We bleed with those who have been subjected to such heinous crimes and cry with them today,” the union said.
The union also demanded justice for the survivors and the centre’s full attention and commitment for restoration of peace in Manipur. “The women in India do not see colour while fighting for the chastity and dignity of every woman and we do not get intimidated by fear if the situation demands,” they said.
