Meghalaya government plans to introduce uniforms in all government colleges to promote equality and unity.
As per a notification issued on June 24, each college will have the autonomy to design its own uniform, allowing for a sense of individuality while maintaining a uniform dress code.
The primary objective behind this initiative is to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students, while also reducing visible socio-economic disparities.
By wearing the same uniform, students from different backgrounds will be able to come together and focus on their academic pursuits without any social or economic biases.
The decision to introduce uniforms was taken after receiving requests from government colleges and their respective student unions.
The department has given each college the freedom to design its own uniform, ensuring that the dress code is tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each institution.
Meanwhile, Commissioner and Secretary of the Education department, Vijay Kumar Mantri when asked how will the uniform policy affect students’ sense of individuality and self-expression, stated that the uniform policy is designed to strike a balance between fostering a collective identity and maintaining student individuality.
He said that colleges have the freedom to design uniforms that reflect their institutional ethos while being inclusive and respectful of cultural and regional diversity.
“Students will continue to express themselves through academics, extracurricular, and ideas beyond attire,” Mantri said.
On how will the uniforms help reduce socio-economic disparities among students, and if so, how will this be measured, he said that these are expected to help reduce socio-economic disparities by creating a visually level environment where economic background is less immediately discernible.
“This impact can be assessed through feedback from college administrations, student unions, and periodic surveys measuring perceptions of inclusivity, peer cohesion, and student well-being across campuses,” the Commissioner and Secretary of the Education department stated.
