Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said that the State will put up a robust sports infrastructure in the next two years to host the 39th National Games, 2027.
He said the infrastructure to hold the prestigious games will spread across Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills and they will not only be built in Shillong, Jowai and Tura but in interior and rural areas.
“The NPP led government is creating an ecosystem for sports, building infrastructure and is providing training to athletes”, he said while out campaigning in Jirang constituency for the February 21 district council elections.
Sangma said it is a proud moment for the state to host the national games. “We never imagined that national games would be held in the state. But today the Indian Olympic Association and Government of India are confident in our vision to promote sports in the state”.
“As per the Meghalaya Sports Policy, we will provide government jobs to the medalists of the national games. I would also like to inform that athletes from the state should prepare well and win medals in the 2027 National Games and avail the opportunity to get government jobs”, he added.
He urged the youth to be prepared and win medals for the state and the government will take care of the rest.
Stating that the wave of NPP is strong in all the five constituencies of Ri Bhoi, Sangma said the party will head both the district councils in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Citing that there are problems at different levels, he said that the district councils play an important role to initiate dialogue, consultation and safeguard the interest of the tribal communities.
