Nongpoh/Shillong, Oct 10: A day after the shocking murder of a 7-year-old boy in Shillong, the brutal murder of another minor, this time a 13-year-old girl, has come to light from Ri-Bhoi.
The girl was killed on Wednesday evening. Her body was found inside a forest at Kalapangti village under the Khyndewso area, which falls under Mawlasnai Police Outpost in Ri-Bhoi.
Police informed today that, prima facie, the victim was raped before being murdered.
According to the girl’s uncle, she had gone to school as usual in the morning and returned home at around 10am. Later, her mother sent her to collect a residential certificate from the village headman’s house.
However, when she did not return home for several hours, her mother began searching and calling for her throughout the afternoon but received no response. Believing that the girl might have gone to a neighbour’s house, the family did not panic at first. But as evening approached and darkness began to fall, panic spread through the village and the residents launched a search operation.
The search team found her body in a forest at around 7:30pm. The victim was lying in a pool of blood, with bleeding visible from her nose and her hand still clutching a notebook. She also had a head injury, suspected to have been caused by a heavy object.
Police have narrowed down on a suspect, though he has been absconding since the incident.
