Shillong, Oct 7: Meghalaya has witnessed a substantial increase in its voter registration over the past two decades, with more than nine lakh new names added to the electoral list between 2005 and 2025, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari said.
Tiwari informed that during the last SIR in 2005, the total number of electorates in Meghalaya was 13, 35, 816 and as of September 2025 this number increased to 23, 06, 384.
The last intensive revision of the electoral roll was conducted in 2005, with the list published on April 15 of that year.
Addressing a press conference today, the CEO informed that a meeting was conducted with various political parties on preparations for the upcoming nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR), recently conducted in Bihar by the Election Commission of India.
As per the latest electoral roll Meghalaya has 1,37,316 male and 11,69,062 female electors. In 2005, these numbers were 6,64,306 male and 6,71,510 female electors. Additionally, there are now six third-gender electors, a category that was not represented in 2005.
Tiwari said that polling stations where electors are more than 1200 per polling station were rationalised to ease the process of voting. He informed that after rationalisation the total number of polling stations in the state now stands at 3,615 with a net increase of 64 polling stations.
Tiwari said the 2005 Electoral Roll and a search facility for individual electors are available on the CEO Meghalaya website.
He also outlined the documents required during the SIR, including identity cards, birth and educational certificates, residence and caste certificates, among others.
Following a Supreme Court order, the Aadhaar card will also be accepted as a supporting document as proof of identity but not citizenship.
