The Meghalaya Tourism Department has cautioned tourists to be aware of fraudulent websites that are impersonating legitimate hotel websites and booking portals in an effort to defraud customers.
The advisory was issued by the department stating there has been a surge in the spread of fake hotel websites and scams targeting guests to Meghalaya by appearing as actual pages and exploit unsuspecting victim.
Tourists are advised to verify the source and check the authenticity of the pages/booking agent before making any payments and also to refer to the list of verified accommodation in the department’s official portal or the app. Tourists are also advised not to provide personal information.
The department said the official online handles are https://www.meghalayatourism.in, @meghtourism on twitter, facebook, instagram, threads and youtube, which are all verified and email at info@meghalayatourism.in.
“If the offer is too good to be true, then it’s most likely false. Pay attention to any small detail that reveals signs of fraudulent activity,” the advisory said, urging public to report any suspicious webpage or scam activities to the police or the department.
