To plug revenue leakage in the system, the Meghalaya government will use QR Code technology on liquor being sold in the State.
The State cabinet in its meeting here today cleared the proposal by the Excise Department to have a QR code based tracking system for every bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in Meghalaya.
“This will help them to track the entire journey of the bottle so that they know exactly where or which shop it was supposed to be sold and if there was any leakage in the system, so this will help them to track the entire system,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told media persons.
The government is expecting that use of QR code technology will plug leakage by 5 per cent to 10 per cent of revenue.
The cabinet also approved the proposal for a composite bar license for hotels.
This is being done in view of different hotels (especially five star hotels) to give it a more structured system.
Earlier, the bar licenses given to the different hotels were based on the number of bars, which means that if a hotel had four bars, then it would have to take four different licenses for each of these bars.
Sangma said that the idea is to give one composite license to the entire entity so that hotels don’t have to apply for separate licenses. However, the bar license fee for such cases will be higher compared to normal bars.
